While It Lasts

The mountains look red this evening - either it's the sunset or my eyes playing tricks on me.

Been traveling the roads most of the day. Saw a deer standing up on a ridge this morning. It stood there watching me for a while. I watched it back. Seemed a fair enough arrangement.

Also been thinking about old camps and old friends. Folks you spend years riding alongside. Some gone, some scattered. That's the way it is, I guess.

It's quiet and peaceful out. Horse seems content enough and there is still a little light left ahead. Reckon I'll keep riding while it lasts.

Somewhere Between Places

Didn’t get much rest last night. Started moving with the first light.

Road’s been quiet enough. Saw a few birds cutting across the sky near noon, moving like they had somewhere important to be. I kept on at my own pace.

Not sure if I’m in the hills or just another stretch of road that feels like hills after a while. Doesn’t much matter, I suppose.

Sun’s dropping now. Horse is doing most of the thinking for me at this point. He seems to know the way better than I do.

Still We Walk

Had to reroute twice today. Parts of the trail were gone. Whole sections of ground looked ready to give way if I put my weight in the wrong place.

Crossed through BT territory near the mountains. BB picked them up before I could see anything. Good thing, too. I could sense them all around me. I kept my head down and moved slow. Made it through without much trouble.

Delivery made. Cargo intact.

Everything out here feels like it's coming apart. Mountains, roads, the sky itself. But there are still people waiting on the other side. So I shoulder the load and keep walking.

Silent Judgement

The fog moved through the streets like something alive. It took the world with it, piece by piece.

Then I saw it - a silent figure standing in the mist. Rusted metal where a face should be. Cages hung in the air above it. They swayed a little, though nothing else moved. The figure stood like an executioner who had long since finished the work.

I should have turned back… it was getting hard to breathe.

Then the figure moved, just slightly. Enough to let me know that it was alive.

I had the uneasy feeling it already knew my name. And everything I’ve been trying to forget.
